MVRDV begins construction on Shenzhen's Bihailou Art Village, a 'vertical village' of independently operated volumes

Dutch studio MVRDV has begun construction on the Bihailou Art Village, a 6,500-square-metre cultural complex in Shenzhen's Shatoujiao neighbourhood, near the Hong Kong border. Designed as a "vertical village," it stacks separatelyentranced volumes — museum, theatre, shops — each setting its own hours. Co-founder Winy Maas said the design "looks complex, but the idea of one space for every function is really quite simple."
