New MLS commissioner Berg rejects promotion and relegation

Larry Berg, introduced as MLS's third commissioner on August 4, said promotion and relegation is "not appropriate" for MLS and will not come "anytime soon." Berg, who takes over from Don Garber on January 1, 2027, called it not "a great way to build a league" and argued jeopardy can be created other ways. MLS remains unique among top-flight football leagues with its closed, single-entity structure.
