Administration cites Trump v. Slaughter in bid to fire U.S. Register of Copyrights

In a July 31, 2026 brief, Trump administration lawyers told a Washington, D.C. district court that the Supreme Court's June 2026 ruling in Trump v. Slaughter — which affirmed broad presidential power to fire executive-branch officials — supports removing Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter. Perlmutter's lawyers argue only the Librarian of Congress holds that authority. The D.C. Circuit ruled in Perlmutter's favour in September 2025.
