Odyssey translator Emily Wilson pans Nolan's film; Joyce Carol Oates fires back

Emily Wilson, whose Odyssey translation Christopher Nolan credited as shaping his adaptation, argued in the London Review of Books that his film lacked "psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth" (Variety, 2 August 2026). Joyce Carol Oates defended Nolan on social media, calling Wilson's language "the crude language of MAGA folks" (Variety). The Odyssey has grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide after three weekends.
