Kumamoto Castle stone walls collapse in 7.1 quake, threatening restoration already set to run until 2052

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake on July 28 collapsed sections of Kumamoto Castle's stone walls. The 1607 landmark, built by feudal lord Kato Kiyomasa, has been under restoration since the 2016 twin earthquakes, with completion set for fiscal 2052. Rintaro Mitsuyasu of the Kumamoto Castle General Office told The Art Newspaper that date could now be delayed. At least 35 people died in the quake.
