Netflix develops Shackleton film with Phil Barantini directing, Mark L. Smith scripting

Netflix is developing a feature on Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton's 1914 Endurance expedition, per Deadline (30 July 2026). Phil Barantini, off the Netflix series Adolescence, will direct; Mark L. Smith, writer of The Revenant, wrote the script. Ridley Scott is among producers. Production is hoped to begin in 2027. The Endurance was crushed by Antarctic ice; Shackleton rescued his entire crew without a single fatality.
