O'Connor wins heptathlon gold, ending Northern Ireland's 52-year multi-event drought

Kate O'Connor, 24, from Newry, won heptathlon gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the first Northern Irish multi-event champion since Dame Mary Peters took pentathlon gold in 1974. O'Connor, coached by her father Michael, led by 258 points entering the final 800m. Katarina Johnson-Thompson, the 2022 champion, withdrew before competition began.
