
Mohawk artist Alan Michelson's walkable oyster-shell earthwork opens on Governors Island
Mohawk artist Alan Michelson's "The Oyster," a walkable geoglyph filled with shells, opened on Governors Island in New York Harbour on July 30, 2026, running through November 30. Commissioned by More Art with the Billion Oyster Project and Governors Island Arts, it forms part of "Reframing 1776: Land, Water, and the Work of Repair," tied to the 250th anniversary of US independence.
