Third-party licensing failure caused August 2025 Xbox outage that blocked game access

On August 3, 2025, Xbox players could not sign in or launch owned games after an externally operated licensing service — not run by Microsoft or Xbox — began failing the night before. Service was restored by 2:30 PM PDT, but unevenly across regions. Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet called the situation unacceptable and committed to a full post-incident review.
