UEFA tells VAR to stop re-refereeing the game

UEFA has told referees across all 55 European associations that VAR should only intervene when an on-field decision is "blatantly incorrect" or a clear incident was missed. The directive, agreed unanimously on 28 July 2026, states "VAR is not meant to re-referee the game." UEFA said lengthy video reviews often signal the original call was not clearly wrong.
