Xbox outage shows owned games need an online check to launch

A failing licensing service locked Xbox players out of their game libraries for roughly 13 hours on July 27, 2026. Even games purchased outright and installed locally require an online licensing check to launch — and when that check fails, the game is effectively unreachable. Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet called the outage "unacceptable" and committed to hardening backend dependencies.
