Britain's uplands supply over 60% of national water, argues new Penguin book 'Upland'
Ed Douglas's 'Upland' (Vintage, Penguin Random House, 9 July 2026, 528 pages) argues that Britain's uplands are infrastructure, not scenery. The book reports that these landscapes supply more than 60% of the nation's water and have been mined since Roman lead workings at Wanlockhead, Scotland. The Guardian reviewed it on 28 July 2026.
