Betye Saar, assemblage artist who recast Aunt Jemima, dies at 99

Betye Saar, the Los Angeles assemblage artist who reworked racist imagery — most famously the Aunt Jemima figure — into symbols of Black female resistance, died on 26 July 2026 at her Laurel Canyon home. Roberts Projects, her gallery in Los Angeles, announced she died in her sleep, four days before her 100th birthday.
