A Seal Returns to Tasmania After 200 Years Away

Neil, a five-year-old southern elephant seal, keeps appearing on Tasmanian shores—possibly the first of his kind born there since hunters destroyed local populations in the 1800s. Wildlife officials see him as a conservation win, though managing a multi-tonne wild animal near towns poses real challenges. The species now breeds mainly on remote islands thousands of kilometres away.
