Burnham could become PM without members voting, under Labour rules

Labour's rulebook allows Andy Burnham to become party leader unopposed if no rival candidate secures 81 MP nominations by Wednesday. With 323 nominations, it becomes mathematically impossible for any challenger to qualify. Burnham would be declared leader by week's end and take office as prime minister on 20 July — without Labour members casting a ballot, despite rules designed to consult the wider membership.
