Treasury Announces Plan to Remove Gas Standing Charges From Household Bills
The Treasury announced on 28 October 2026 that gas standing charges, fixed costs paid regardless of usage, will be removed from household bills. The fixed costs would instead be recovered through the unit rate, the price paid per unit of gas used. Chancellor John Healey plans to ask Ofgem, the energy regulator, to deliver this in 2027 or soon after.
