Alison Kuo plays the military general her grandmother performed in Cantonese opera

New York artist Alison Kuo inherited a costume beard her grandmother wore as a Cantonese opera singer in Hong Kong. In her new performance, A flame latches to a bit of straw, at the New Museum in Manhattan, Kuo plays the same military general. Performances run 22-24 October 2026, closing her museum residency, The Art Newspaper reports.
