U.S. Planned Fossil Capacity Reaches 68 GW by 2030 on Rising Demand
Planned U.S. fossil-fuel power would reach 68 GW of capacity by 2030, up 45% from six months earlier, according to Environmental Defense Fund and Atlas Public Policy analysis of federal EIA data. Fossil plants rose from 5% of planned new capacity in 2024 to 30% in Q2 2026, driven by growing electricity demand from data centers, factories and electric vehicles.
