More than 4,500 US school-banned titles were new to PEN America's count

More than 4,500 of 7,370 unique titles banned in US public schools in 2025-2026 had never been recorded by PEN America before. The group counted 11,982 instances, meaning individual removal actions, its highest total since it began recording in 2021.
