Federal government stops tracking cost of weather disasters

NOAA ended its Billion Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters dataset in May 2025, halting updates beyond 2024. The program tracked 403 disaster events costing over $1 billion each since 1980 and served as the standard measure for extreme-weather losses. Insurers, emergency managers, and Congress used the annual figures to plan responses and budgets. The historical data remains, but the running tally has stopped.
