Tokyo court rules voice can be protected by publicity rights in Japan

Tokyo District Court ruled on Sept. 30 that a voice can fall under publicity rights protection in Japan, believed the first ruling of its kind. Presiding judge Aya Takahashi held protection applies where sole purpose is to exploit commercial appeal. The court did not decide if voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda's rights were infringed in the TikTok AI-voice case.
