
Pentagon Reclassifies Drug Traffickers as Terrorists to Broaden Lethal Authority at Sea
The U.S. military has killed at least seven people in four strikes on suspected drug vessels in the Eastern Pacific since December 2025. By designating trafficking organizations as terrorist entities, the Pentagon shifted oversight from law enforcement to military rules of engagement. This lowers the standard for targeting and eliminates the requirement to attempt capture. Congress from both parties is now reviewing the decision.
