Art Institute of Chicago to return Metzinger painting to Lewenstein heirs

The Art Institute of Chicago in the United States has agreed to return Jean Metzinger's 1913 Woman With a Fan to the heirs of Emanuel Lewenstein, The Art Newspaper reported. The museum concluded the work, auctioned in Amsterdam in October 1940, was sold as a result of Nazi persecution. It acquired the oil-on-canvas in 1959 from a New York gallery.
