South Korea Becomes Keeper of a French Shipwreck France Itself Forgot

Bigeumdo, a South Korean island, is hosting a festival celebrating the 1851 wreck of the French whaling ship Le Narval. French archives contain little on this era of maritime casualties. Instead, the island is building a cultural tourism initiative around the shipwreck and the crew's passage through before reaching Shanghai—showing how forgotten histories find preservation outside their origin nation.
