Why planning ahead helps weaker AI coders, saves money for stronger ones

Planning ahead improves accuracy for weaker AI coding models, but for stronger models it mainly lowers token costs, the computing expense, with little accuracy gain, a 17 September arXiv study found. Researchers tested four models on two coding tests, SWE-Bench Verified and Terminal-Bench 2.1, using 176 identical setups.
