Russia and China Veto Extended Iran Sanctions Watch

Russia and China vetoed a U.S.-backed Security Council resolution September 17, 2026 to extend independent monitoring of Iran sanctions, or economic penalties. Eleven members voted yes; Pakistan and Somalia abstained. The veto ends the watchdog panel. The sanctions were reimposed after Western powers accused Iran of violating the 2015 nuclear deal.
