Palace sets aside no-comment rule to answer Spencer memoir

Buckingham Palace has answered Earl Spencer’s Swan Song, set for publication on September 22, departing from its principle of not commenting on books. Responding to Spencer’s account of a September 1997 call after Diana’s death, it said “the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise”.
