Register names Elizabeth I among backers of Hawkins's 1560s slave voyages
The Register of British Slave Traders, a three-year project led by Prof William Pettigrew of King's College London, names Queen Elizabeth I among backers of John Hawkins's slave-trading voyages in the 1560s. It also lists William Cecil, Robert Dudley and Sir Thomas Lodge, lord mayor of London. The Register defines traders as direct financiers expecting a profit share.
