South Sea Company sent red-hot crown brand to mark enslaved people

The South Sea Company's London board sent its Buenos Aires agents a crown-shaped brand with written instructions to heat it red hot and apply it to enslaved African people's left shoulders. Lancaster University historian Dr Nicholas Radburn found the order in company archives, The Guardian reported on 14 September 2026.
