U.S. and Japan Join Forces to Prop Up the Yen

Washington and Tokyo acted jointly to support the yen after finance ministers met Aug. 31. The U.S. bought $833 million in yen, as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned traders against betting against the effort. Japan aims to curb import costs; Washington wants to deter sales of its Treasury bonds. Further action could squeeze traders betting the yen will fall.
