Bayeux Tapestry goes on public display at the British Museum, its first departure from France in over 900 years

The Bayeux Tapestry, a 70-metre wool embroidery depicting the Norman Conquest of 1066, opened to the public at the British Museum in London on 10 September 2026 — its first time leaving France in over nine centuries. The textile arrived in London on 10 July 2026 after condition checks. The exhibition runs through 11 July 2027 in the Sainsbury Exhibitions gallery.
