Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch to retire after months of pressure from Trump

Lonnie G. Bunch III, 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, announced on 8 September 2026 that he will retire at year's end. The Associated Press reported his departure follows "a challenging year" in which President Donald Trump accused the institution of promoting divisive narratives. No interim Secretary has been named.
