Rembrandt smuggled from Gotha in 1946 returns on loan — without restitution

A Friedenstein Gotha Foundation spokesperson says the ducal family "illegally removed" Rembrandt's Youthful Self-portrait (1629) from Gotha in 1946. Princess Victoria Adelaide of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha smuggled it to Coburg; in 1954 it was sold to the Bavarian State Painting Collections for DM75,000 (around $18,000). Bavaria retains ownership and lends the work to Gotha's Ducal Museum from 5 September to 6 December 2026. No restitution has followed.
