India's Textbook Board Digitally Altered a 4,600-Year-Old Statue, Then Reversed It
India's National Council of Educational Research and Training digitally shaded the bare torso of the Dancing Girl of Mohenjo-daro—a 2600 BCE bronze figurine—in a class 9 art textbook for age-appropriateness. Archaeologists and art historians objected that the alteration distorted the artifact's original iconographic meaning. The board reversed course by June 2026, restoring the original image and withdrawing the modified version.
