UK sets first social media age restrictions as parents drive policy

The UK government released proposals on 15 June to restrict children's access to social media, banning livestreaming and limiting stranger contact. No minimum age currently exists in UK law. A March 2026 consultation showed nine in ten parents support restrictions for under-16s. Similar rules are rolling out across Australia and Europe.
