Waymo released ReD, a model that captures how skilled human drivers avoid crashes, and is using it to test its latest autonomous vehicles. Rather than counting miles driven, the company now compares its self-driving system directly to human crash-avoidance behavior. This approach aims to validate that Waymo's cars are safe enough to operate without a human safety operator on board.
