A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck San José del Palmar, Chocó, on August 10, 2026, at 103 km depth along the Nazca Plate subduction zone, where one tectonic plate slides beneath another. The Guardian, citing Reuters, reported at least 82 dead. Colombia's SGC called it the largest instrumentally recorded quake, though an 8.8 hit the Pacific coast in 1906.
