Andrew Haigh optioned Colm Tóibín's short story 'A Long Winter' around its 2006 publication, before directing a single film, per The Hollywood Reporter. An early draft kept the Spanish setting; Haigh, who does not speak Spanish, found that hindered financing. The finished film relocates to 1950s Colorado Rockies.
