Prince Hisahito, 19, Completes First Solo Royal Duties in Hiroshima
Prince Hisahito, second in line to Japan's Chrysanthemum Throne, carried out his first solo official duties on August 7, 2026. The 19-year-old addressed 8,000 scouts at Japan's national Scout Jamboree in Hiroshima and laid flowers at the atomic bomb cenotaph. He is the first male Japanese royal to reach adulthood in nearly 40 years. The imperial family has so few male heirs that, under current succession law, he could be the last emperor.
