Company Paid $1.2 Billion to Cancel US Wind Farms Redirects Money to Fossil Fuels

The Trump administration paid energy company RWE $1.2 billion to cancel offshore wind farm leases off California, Louisiana, and New York. RWE will spend $900 million on a share of a Louisiana facility that exports natural gas overseas, and $300 million on gas-fired power turbines for 15 US power plants. The cancelled New York wind farm alone would have powered over three million homes. RWE separately bought wind farm rights in the UK large enough to power roughly seven million homes.
