AI Creates Working Viruses from Scratch

Arc Institute and Stanford researchers used AI to design entirely new viruses from scratch. The AI, trained on vast amounts of DNA data, generated about 700,000 possible designs; 16 actually worked as viruses that infect bacteria, with some performing better than natural ones. The study was published in Science on August 6, 2026.
