American-Born Pope Plans First South America Trip

Pope Leo XIV, the first pope born in the United States, will visit Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6–17, 2026. It is his first trip to South America — twelve days in total, with the longest stay in Peru. The visit may reveal how people there respond to a pope who is American, given the region's deep but complex Catholic roots.
