A piece of a SpaceX rocket hit the Moon — only the second time this has happened by accident

A four-tonne piece of a SpaceX rocket — leftover after a launch — crashed into the Moon near Einstein Crater on 5 August 2026 at 06:35 UTC. It was moving at 8,700 km/h with the force of three tonnes of explosives. Spacecraft orbiting the Moon saw the dust it kicked up. Only once before has a discarded rocket accidentally hit the Moon.
