Deep Freeze Pushes New Zealand's Power System to Record Demand

Since 4 August, a blast of Antarctic cold has swept New Zealand, dropping temperatures to -9°C on the South Island and dusting Wellington with snow for the first time in 11 years. Transpower, which runs the country's electricity network, recorded its highest-ever power demand Wednesday and warned supply could fall short Friday as heaters surge on. Forecasters say Thursday may be the coldest morning of the year.
