440,000 New Zealanders don't have enough work

Stats NZ says 440,000 New Zealanders now lack enough work — up 31,000 in the June 2026 quarter. That includes people who want more hours and people who want a job but have given up looking. The official unemployment rate sits at 5.6 percent, but that number alone misses much of the problem.
