India's ruling party, the BJP, lost Bankipur — a seat it held for 30 years — to Prashant Kishor's new Jan Suraaj party on 3 August 2026. Kishor won 64,117 votes to the BJP's 44,794. The loss followed student protests over leaked exam papers that pushed Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign. Kishor called it a "wake-up call" for Modi.
