Telescope Finds That One of Neptune's Moons Likely Wrecked the Others

NASA's Webb telescope studied seven of Neptune's moons. Caltech researchers, reporting in August 2026, say Triton — a moon that orbits backward relative to Neptune's spin — likely disrupted the moons already there, causing crashes. The wreckage then clumped together to form the small inner moons we see today. The conclusion is based on light measurements, not direct sightings of impacts.
