India Moves to Allow Fees on Popular UPI Payment App

India's government wants to let banks charge businesses for accepting payments through UPI, the country's popular mobile payment system. Since January 2020, businesses paid no fees. The bill doesn't set any charges — it simply allows them. Details on rates and which businesses pay will come later. The network handled a record 23.66 billion transactions in July 2026.
