
Red Cross Visits Myanmar's Detained Leader — First Outside Contact in Five Years
A Red Cross worker privately met with Myanmar's detained former leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, on August 3, 2026. It was the first confirmed contact from outside since the military took control in February 2021. For years, other countries had demanded proof she was still alive. Myanmar broke the Red Cross's usual privacy rule by releasing photos of the meeting.
