$1.8 Billion Justice Department Fund Shut Down Before Paying Anyone
Acting Attorney General Blanche shut down a $1.78 billion fund on August 3, 2026, just months after creating it. The fund was meant to pay people who said they were unfairly prosecuted for political reasons, including some charged in the January 6 Capitol riot. It never paid anyone. Two Republican senators had opposed it. A vote on Blanche's nomination is set for August 5.
